In this episode of The Power of Design Podcast, host Jack Ossa reconnects with Clayton Sealey, who last appeared on the show four years ago. Since then, Clayton has transitioned from working at Southwood Corporation to leading the marketing and communications strategy for The Mint Museum. He also continues running CLT Development and serves as a member of Charlotte’s Planning Commission.
Clayton shares how The Mint Museum is working to reach all parts of the community making it clear that it’s no longer “your grandparents’ museum.” From bringing in a skateboard deck exhibition to celebrating demographic diversity in museum attendance, the goal is to reflect and engage the entire city of Charlotte.
As a Planning Commissioner, he plays a role in rezonings and city acquisitions related to water, sewer, schools, and public safety. His civic engagement reflects his desire to ensure Charlotte grows responsibly and remains well connected.
His passion for cities began early, influenced by his father’s work on buildings like the Westin and One Wells Fargo in Charlotte. That passion eventually led him to study architecture at SCAD, then pivot into branding and advertising blending design sensibility with strategic communication.
Clayton’s 12 years living in Brooklyn shaped his love for urban density, walkability, and community connection — which he now seeks to bring back to Charlotte.
He believes culture is what binds cities together, giving them character, vibrancy, and a reason for people to return and reconnect.
From his role in planning decisions to museum leadership, Clayton works to ensure development decisions benefit the full spectrum of Charlotte residents.
Clayton Sealey is a vital voice in shaping Charlotte’s future. His work at The Mint Museum, his presence in local policy, and his online influence through CLT Development reflect a commitment to accessible culture, inclusive growth, and civic dialogue. This episode highlights how the power of design extends beyond buildings — into planning, communication, and the daily experience of urban life.
