Melmark Carolinas is a 22,470 SF interior fit-out of an existing single-story building transformed into a full-service school for students with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ossa Studio provided comprehensive architectural and engineering design services for Melmark, a nonprofit special education organization committed to evidence-based care. The design encompasses classrooms, therapy rooms, a gym and multipurpose space, an eatery, administrative offices, and a welcoming reception — all carefully arranged to maximize natural daylighting along the building's perimeter and reinforce Melmark's brand identity.
The project required a change of occupancy classification to I-4 (Institutional) and involved structural lateral system upgrades, new HVAC roof support, ADA improvements, and civil site work including stormwater pond engineering and a playground area. New walls, doors, restrooms, ceilings, light fixtures, millwork cabinetry, and custom wall and floor finishes were installed throughout the facility. Construction documents were issued in October 2022, with construction administration carried through 2023 by general contractor Swinerton, delivering a state-of-the-art learning environment purpose-built for students with special needs.
